FALL HARVEST AND SEAFOOD FESTIVAL at CAPTREE STATE PARK -- The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation is pleased to announce the 4th Annual Fall Harvest and Seafood Festival.  This event will be taking place on Saturday, September 15 and Sunday, September, 16 at Captree State Park from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

The event will include wine tasting of local Long Island wines, as well as a variety of activities for children, including crab races, boat rides, temporary tattoos, interactive pirate shows, and much more!  All activities are free; however, there is a $6.00 vehicle use fee in effect from 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM. 

This event is sponsored by the Natural Heritage Trust and the Long Island State Park Region.  Corporate contributors include Four Friends, Inc. (Captree Cove Restaurant), Captree Bait, Tackle and Fuel, WALK-FM, Captree Boatman’s Association, and Four Seasons Sunrooms.

18th ANNUAL “Second Sight®” BIKE-A-THON -    The Guide Dog Foundation for the Blind, Inc.  

 Novice and experienced bikers will enjoy a day of exercise, food, and friends while supporting the Guide Dog Foundation mission to improve the quality of life for people who are blind, visually impaired, or who have other special needs.  Featuring new revised routes of LI’s North Shore with rides ranging from 10 to 65 miles long.  All rides begin and end at the Foundation’s Smithtown campus.  Upon return, participants will be treated to a lunch, tours of our 8-acre campus, and visits with our special dogs.

 

All pre-registered riders will receive a free 2007 Bike-A-Thon t-shirt and a free first-year membership in the Suffolk Bicycle Riders Association.  The top three fundraisers will get a gift certificate from Campus Bicycle & Fitness.  All riders are entered in a random drawing to win gift certificates to Carl Hart Bicycles.

 

Registration fees are $29 individual; $45 family (2 or more related people); and $10 per child (12 & under) if postmarked before September 6.   After September 6, late/in-person registration is $35 individual; $50 family.  Sponsors are not required to ride in the event.

16th ANNUAL FALL FESTIVAL on Saturday and Sunday, October 6th and 7th, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Deepwells Farm County Park in St. James.  Hosted by the Suffolk County Department of Parks, Recreation and Conservation and the Deepwells Farm Historic Society  at Deepwells Farm County Park in St. James. Highlights craft vendors, face painting, a magic show, storytellers, a real live petting farm from Cornell Cooperative Extension, festival food, and the always popular hay bale fun jump, and a wide variety of foods and merchandise including hand made crafts, pumpkins and candy from the St. James General Store.  Tours of Deepwells Farm will also be available throughout the day.   Admission to the festival is $5.00 for adults, $1.00 for seniors and children under 12.  Parking is available in the field opposite the St. James General Store for free.  Deepwells Farm is located at the intersection of Moriches Road and Route 25A in St. James.  For further information call (631) 854-0989.

WRITING WORKSHOP for BREAST CANCER PATIENTS:  What to say when you don’t know what to say. - Writer and social worker Laura Parisi King, also a breast cancer survivor, teaches writing in this free workshop for breast cancer patients and survivors on Monday, October 29, from 7 pm to 8:30 pm at Adelphi University’s Alumni House in Garden  City. This program is open only to breast cancer patients and survivors. It is sponsored by a grant from The New York State Department of Health, Community Based Cancer Support Services.
