Brookhaven
Calls Energy Summit |
|
July 10, 2001 Brookhaven Supervisor John Jay LaValle will host an all-day Long Island Energy Summit on Thursday, July 12 in the auditorium of Brookhaven Town Hall. The summit will begin at 8:30 a.m. and lunch will served. “We are all witnessing the disaster in skyrocketing energy costs and destabilized power supply markets that has befallen the people of California, due to the errors in judgement by elected officials, regulators, and utilities,” observed LaValle. “Long Island’s elected officials must provide the necessary leadership now in order to avoid the California tragedy.” LaValle explained that the reason for the energy summit is to “harness the collective expertise on Long Island and the state to develop energy strategies to ensure that Long Island is equipped to meet its power supply requirements.” LaValle has invited a variety of energy experts to make individual presentations on a variety of topics, including possible power plant projects, solar, wind and fuel cell energy options, conservation/efficiency scenarios, and transmission and distribution infrastructure improvements. A general roundtable discussion among the presenters will also be part of the summit agenda. Long Island Power Authority Chairman Richard Kessel said, “I think this energy summit is a great idea. We have choices to make as we plan Long Island’s energy future, and it’s important to have a thorough discussion of all our options.” Anne Mead, Chairperson of the Citizens Advisory Panel, a energy watchdog group, welcomed the energy summit. “It’s about time that we had a special forum to discuss energy issues. Participation among all relevant parties is a key component in developing an energy plan for Long Island.” “Long Island’s power generation needs continue to grow,” said Robert B. Catell, chairman and CEO of Keyspan. “We need to work together today so the Island’s residents and businesses can thrive tomorrow without the threat of a diminished energy supply.” “The energy summit provides a perfect opportunity to inform the public about how energy efficiency and renewables can make important contribution towards meeting our growing demands of energy,” said Ashok Gupta, Senior Energy Economist of the National Resources Defense Council. Mitch Paley, LIA Vice President for Legislative and Economic Affairs noted that one of the most talked about subjects in the business community is power supplies. “If we want to continue to attract companies to Long Island, we must demonstrate that Long Island has a dependable supply of power. I think the energy summit is a long awaited important step in addressing Long Island’s energy needs.” LaValle’s summit plans include presentations from Dr. Lee Koppelman, Executive Director, Long Island Regional Planning Board, solar, wind, & fuel cell technology experts, and regulatory agencies that oversee Long Island’s power structure. The Supervisor and the Town Board have received several new proposals from energy corporations for Brookhaven. “Our goal is to gather all the experts in one room and try to obtain the best possible information as the Town Board and I review the many new energy ideas and proposals for our community.”
